Trouble Shooting
Electric ovens – Built in and free standing
The Oven does not work.
Note: Any Gas or electric oven or hob that is plugged into a wall socket could blow a fuse, usually because of a fault. Sometimes the socket can be faulty, rather than the appliance. To prove this try plugging in a table lamp or something you are sure is working into the socket if that is possible, this will enable you to check the wall socket is working before doing anything else.....
Check the display timer, is it on?
If the answer is no then check the power switch is turned
on, look for the power supply switch ( Usually a red
switch button, examples can be seen by
clicking on the link) make sure it has not been turned off by
accident, check the
fuse board and see if any trip switches have
turned off.
If the display timer is on but flashing you may have had a brief power cut, consult the manufacturers instruction booklet and reset the display timer to manual and try the oven again.
If the display timer is off or you do not have a display timer check the power supply switch as above and make sure it has not been turned off by accident, check the fuse board and see if any trip switches have turned off. If the fuse board trip switch has turned off you may have a fault with your cooker. Turn off the cooker switch, turn on the trip switch and then turn the cooker switch back on, try your oven again. If the fuse board trips again it is likely the oven is at fault .
My Oven Went Bang or tripped the fuse Board when in use or when not in use.
Indicates a high possibility of an electrical failure of a component within the oven.
In some cases ( Free standing ovens or Hobs) spillage of liquids on the hob top can get into the electrics, if you know this has happened then turn off the electrics and wait 24 hours to dry out. If the fault continues call a technician.
In all instances it is advisable to read the Manufacturers Instruction manual before calling a technician as it could save you time and money.
Gas Appliances – Mixed Fuel Ovens (Gas & Electric) – Gas Hobs
The Hob/ Oven Ignition does not work.
Check the power switch is turned on, look for the power supply
switch ( Usually a red
switch button, examples can be seen by
clicking on the link) make sure it has not been turned off by
accident, check the
fuse board and see if any trip switches have
turned off.
Check the plug fuse (hobs and Gas Ovens) Usually a 5 Amp fuse,
replace with a new one to try. If you have tried all of the above
call a technician.
In all instances of breakdown, please do not be tempted to dismantle
an appliance unless you have been trained how to do so, High
voltages can be stored inside some appliances and could cause
serious harm or Death, please leave it to a professional.

Are Annual Maintenance Contracts good value?
Many White goods manufacturers offer online support when things go wrong, please see the checklist above that may help you before you call an engineer. Please note Manufacturers will often divert your enquiry to an insurance company who will offer a low cost repair option if you sign up for an Insurance policy. Personally I look at it a bit like a gym monthly membership, once paid you forget about it and three years later you are £450.00 lighter on an appliance that may have cost less.
Calling an Independent and local engineer may save you ££’s in the long run.
